In December 26, 1991 the Arab Republic of Egypt recognized independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan. On April 4, 1992 the Protocol on setting up diplomatic relations between two countries was signed. The Embassy of the Arab Republic of Egypt in Baku has been performing since April 1993 and the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Cairo since January 1994.
